The first time Xiahou Dan thought about making a ring was after seeing the skylark hairpin sent by Lin Xuanying.
Although Yu Wanyin didn’t wear it in her hair at the time, her appreciative gaze made Xiahou Dan feel a serious sense of crisis.
He decided to create an engagement ring.
His design concept was clear: Lin Xuanying considers you a skylark, I consider you a phoenix. Soaring high, flying through the nine heavens, only resting on a parasol tree (which refers to me).
The idea was good.
But when he handed the sketch of the “Phoenix Perching on Parasol Tree” to the craftsman, the craftsman fell silent.
Xiahou Dan asked, “What’s wrong?”
The craftsman wiped his sweat nervously and said, “Your Majesty, this drawing of a rooster on a tree… is truly a stroke of genius.”

Li Yunxi was sullen throughout and soon drank himself into a stupor, collapsing onto the table in a deep sleep.
Yang Duoji also drank too much and suddenly slapped the table, saying, “Brother Er, one should live life without shame to the heavens and earth, why fear what people say!”

Nameless Guest closed his mouth again.

Months later, the news of death still hadn’t come.
Instead, a secret letter from Xiahou Dan arrived.
After reading it, Lin Xuanying’s expression changed dramatically, and after a long while, he went to the Nameless Guest to vent his frustration. “Why didn’t Master tell me sooner! Did you find it amusing to watch me drink?”
Nameless Guest: “…”
Nameless Guest, with a profound look, said, “Very amusing.”

Xiahou Dan said, “But not real killing. You kill a—think of it as a puppet. It can die repeatedly.”

The story started out so funny but then quickly became serious and had so much angst, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I am so in love with the main leads and how they emotionally support each other as the other’s sole companion and safe harbor. If I were a poet like the scholar side characters, I would write more eloquently. But I really, really loved how beautiful your translation is. Thank you so much again Veyrithele!! ❤️❤️❤️
