Chinese Almanac Master Chapter 10 – Valentine’s Day

Chinese Almanac Master Chapter 10

Valentine's Day

Valentine’s Day, a day for couples to celebrate their love for each other. This was originally a Western holiday, but in recent years, it has gradually become known to young people due to deliberate marketing strategies by certain businesses, and has even joined the ranks of the old almanac. Just as one must eat zongzi on Dragon Boat Festival and mooncakes on Mid-Autumn Festival, expensive gifts such as flowers, chocolates, and candlelit dinners are given on this day as proof of love to those one cares about. Even though this day, overflowing with sweet pink sentiment, is actually quite awkward for most people who currently don’t have a partner, this still can’t stop Valentine’s Day from being a knife-wielding maniac continuously harming innocent people with its heartless actions.

Lying on the sofa supporting his head, Valentine’s Day lazily yawned, his body exuding a rich scent of roses. This might seem excessively feminine for a man, but it suited his face, which was so beautiful that it was difficult to determine whether he was male or female. He used to be just an ordinary day, but it was precisely because he got the title of Valentine’s Day that he joined the ranks of holidays, which always made Valentine’s Day himself quite self-satisfied. Since he appeared in this house, the entire room seemed to be coated with a layer of pinkish glow, and even the wild cats’ cries from downstairs became more piercingly melodious.

Because when he first appeared, he used mockery as his greeting, Xiao Nanzhu naturally felt somewhat reluctant to engage with him. Before this guy showed up, he hadn’t expected that there would be such an annoying character in the old almanac. Not only did he constantly talk about trivial matters, but he was also always keen on discussing Xiao Nanzhu’s lifelong happiness. Unfortunately, this unlucky day still had more than ten hours to go, driving Xiao Nanzhu to the point of wanting to send him back immediately.

On one side, Xiao Nanzhu’s feelings were complex; on the other side, Valentine’s Day didn’t consider himself an outsider at all. He quickly occupied half the sofa and kept talking to Xiao Nanzhu about topics that made people want to hit him just from listening.

“Hey, Xiao Nanzhu, I’m saying you’re already thirty, why haven’t you found a partner yet? (⊙v⊙)?”

With a somewhat teasing tone, Valentine’s Day looked at Xiao Nanzhu with a half-smile.

“…”

Silently flipping through ‘Zhou Gong’s Complete Dream Interpretation’ in his hands, cramming knowledge about metaphysics and having his sore spot touched, the old bachelor Xiao Nanzhu decided to ignore him.

“Being alone is so pitiful. In the quiet of the night, you must feel very empty, very lonely, very cold, right? (* ̄▽ ̄)y”

Having received no response, the thick-skinned Valentine’s Day decided to persist in stimulating Xiao Nanzhu.

“…”

Seeing that the person in front of him still wouldn’t respond, Valentine’s Day got even more excited and directly cleared his throat, tilting his head up to say:

“Then how about I introduce someone to you? I know what type you like, with a perky butt in bed…”

“I’m asking if you ever stop.”

Unable to bear it any longer, Xiao Nanzhu put down the book in his hand as soon as Valentine’s Day said this, his expression turning cold. But even though he looked quite intimidating with his furrowed brows and stern face, Valentine’s Day wasn’t afraid of him at all. Instead, after giggling for a few moments, Valentine’s Day moved closer to him and lowered his voice:

“Don’t worry, don’t worry, we’re all men, I understand. I won’t tell Twenty-fifth that he’s exactly your favorite type to flirt with. But regarding our hourly wage issue, I think we might need to discuss further…”

“Heh.”

Instinctively narrowing his eyes, immediately understanding what he was up to, Xiao Nanzhu’s lips curved slightly upward, his gaze becoming somewhat unpredictable. Valentine’s Day, who originally thought he had caught Xiao Nanzhu’s weakness and was prepared to make some demands, blinked his eyes waiting for the new boss to respond. But before he could react, Xiao Nanzhu had already frivolously moved to his ear and spoke in a husky voice:

“Hey, aren’t calendar spirits supposed to know everything? Don’t you know that you’re exactly my favorite type to sleep with? Twenty-fifth is too green, but you’re just right. Why don’t we forget about everything else today, and I’ll have some good fun with you at home…”

Before the words were finished, Valentine’s Day felt his butt being patted, neither too hard nor too softly. This strong sense of crisis to his chastity made his face instantly pale. But if he ran away now, it would mean going on strike for the day, and moreover, with Xiao Nanzhu being so tall and strong, he seemed unable to do anything about him. After stuttering for a long time, his face turning red and unexpectedly showing a somewhat innocent side, Valentine’s Day finally broke down and shouted:

“Stop dreaming!! You… you won’t succeed!!! Don’t even think about it!! You, you, you… don’t look for me, wuuu QAQ”

His aggressive words softened halfway through. Valentine’s Day, who had been swaggering in front of Xiao Nanzhu for quite some time, had finally taken a fall. Seeing his cowardly appearance and almost unable to hold back his laughter, Xiao Nanzhu covered his mouth and coughed, slowly retreating to his half of the sofa, picking up his book and sitting down. Only then did he glance at him calmly and say:

“Be good and I’ll spare you. No noise. Come out with me later, I need your help.”

This time, Valentine’s Day didn’t dare to contradict Xiao Nanzhu’s words. Although he was still quite reluctant in his heart, when Xiao Nanzhu turned on the TV and tuned to a dating show for him to watch and alleviate boredom, he still curled up in a corner of the sofa and began to watch attentively.

“This male guest matches well with No. 10… Hey, look, sure enough, they held hands in the end… Wow, this person has poor luck in love, haha, all the lights went out… Oh, the third male guest has been married before, what’s he doing here, ahh ahh ahh what a scumbag, quickly turn him down…”

Due to his innate ability to predict love fortunes and marriage destiny, Valentine’s Day kept muttering to himself while watching. Xiao Nanzhu had originally wanted him to stay quiet and behave, but seeing him unable to calm down, he completely surrendered. Since he had arranged to meet with the transport man Zhao Tiansheng today, he was ready to head out when the time was right. But as he was about to change his shoes by the door, Xiao Nanzhu realized that as a fine single man, he was going to meet a middle-aged loser for dinner on Valentine’s Day, which made his mood quite heavy.

Predictably, today Zhao Tiansheng would surely ask him about his work and marriage matters. After all, Twenty-fifth had already exposed his improper private life last night, so naturally, he would want the seemingly all-knowing Xiao Nanzhu to tell him what to do next. Helping him would definitely be unethical, so Xiao Nanzhu’s purpose for going today was just to get whatever benefits he could, resolving his own crisis of not having money to buy New Year’s goods. Valentine’s Day naturally didn’t notice Xiao Nanzhu’s sad mood, because as soon as they went out, he was completely attracted by the bustling city scene before his eyes. Perhaps in response to the theme of the holiday, the streets were full of couples and spouses wearing matching winter outfits. Xiao Nanzhu had long strides, smoking and walking quickly ahead without waiting for him, while Valentine’s Day followed behind him, looking around and straining his ears. Whenever he heard people passing by saying “Happy Valentine’s Day” and such, he would smile smugly with the corner of his mouth.

“Did you hear that? They’re all wishing me happiness~”

Boasting quietly to Xiao Nanzhu, Valentine’s Day’s smug appearance made Xiao Nanzhu laugh involuntarily. He thought to himself that he should verbally flatter this easily satisfied calendar spirit later. Just as they were approaching the restaurant they had arranged to meet at, he told Valentine’s Day to conceal his form first. When Xiao Nanzhu walked into the restaurant he had arranged with Zhao Tiansheng, he stood still and couldn’t help but display an embarrassed expression.

In the entire hall, out of a total of ten tables, nine tables were occupied by couples. This awkward situation made Zhao Tiansheng, who was waiting there, a bit anxious and uneasy. As soon as he saw Xiao Nanzhu standing at the door, he immediately breathed a sigh of relief, stood up, and shouted:

“Old Brother Xiao, come quick! Come quick! Over here! I’ve been waiting for you for so long! I was dying of anxiety!!”

A completely normal sentence that somehow sounded strange in this context. Everyone in the restaurant was staring at these two men having dinner together on Valentine’s Day. With his face instantly darkening, Xiao Nanzhu walked expressionlessly to Zhao Tiansheng’s table and sat down. Suppressing all his anger, he lit a cigarette, took a puff, then lifted his chin, curved his lips into a smile, and said:

“Why is Brother Zhao in such a hurry? Do you need to go back and accompany your wife for the festival later?”

“Well, I have other arrangements later. Already got several phone calls urging me…”

Zhao Tiansheng’s suggestive remark made Xiao Nanzhu glance at him a few times. Knowing that this kind of person probably wouldn’t accompany his legal wife, he didn’t inquire further. Sure enough, after just a few sentences, Zhao Tiansheng started talking about what he truly cared about, expressing that if his problem could be solved, he would definitely show his gratitude. Just as Xiao Nanzhu nodded and prepared to take notes, he suddenly heard a middle-aged woman hysterically shouting behind him:

“Zhao Tiansheng!! I knew you weren’t helping a friend transport goods!! So you came out to have dinner with this little hussy on Valentine’s Day!! Let me see the face of this shameless little thing!! Ah!! What the hell!!… A man!!! (⊙o⊙)!”

Xiao Nanzhu: “…………”

Explanation:

Zongzi (粽子) is a traditional Chinese rice dish made of glutinous rice stuffed with various fillings, wrapped in bamboo leaves, reed leaves, or other large flat leaves, and then steamed or boiled. It’s most famously associated with the Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu Festival), which typically falls in May or June.

In the Chinese Almanac Master novel, zongzi is mentioned in Chapter 10 as an example of the strong connection between traditional Chinese festivals and their corresponding foods: “Just as one must eat zongzi on Dragon Boat Festival and mooncakes on Mid-Autumn Festival…” This reference illustrates how deeply food traditions are embedded in Chinese cultural celebrations.

Zongzi has regional variations throughout China, with different shapes, fillings, and flavors. Common fillings include sweet options like red bean paste or savory versions with pork, salted egg yolk, mushrooms, or chestnuts. The triangular or rectangular rice packages are tied with strings and have a distinctive appearance and fragrance from the leaves they’re wrapped in.
